The 2011 F295 Symposium: Further Explorations on the Idea of a 21st Century Photography, will be held in Pittsburgh PA USA from June 2-5, 2011. The opening reception, lectures, and round-table discussion are held in association with the Center for Arts in Society at Carnegie Mellon University and the workshops are held in association with Pittsburgh Filmmakers. The event will also feature an industry trade show, portfolio sharing event, 2 free photo walk-abouts, and much more!!

F295 and Freestyle Photographic are pleased to present the symposium opening reception which begins at 5pm Thursday, June 2 with an industry trade fair, informal work-sharing/portfolio review session, and the featured artists talk Sally Mann in Conversation with Dan Estabrook. Dan will lead a wide ranging discussion with Sally about her work, and the thoughts, ideas, and rationale behind it. He’ll explore her recent body of work Proud Flesh, discuss her thoughts on the contemporary use of 19th century processes, and look at a number of other topics including the ideas of Light, Time, and the Apparatus. F295 speakers have been offering reflection and exploring these three constituent elements of photography for over 5 years.

*All of this years workshops save the daguerreotype workshop (3 days) and the 2 photo walks (partial days each) are 2 days in duration. All workshops begin promptly at 9am, so please meet at the cafe at Pittsburgh Filmmakers no later than 8:45am. We’ll have a few short announcements and then you’ll get to work!
