It should really be holidays stuck in my flat. I've been sick for a month this summer.
[ warning! gory bit ahead!]I thought at first I had a back case of flu or something like that. I had fever every evening for almost ten days. Some days I felt better, but never really in good shape. After a month I got really annoyed. What do you think I did, go to the doctor, at last? Nope, I just felt I needed to lie down with my head lower than my lungs so I could get rid of that thing that felt aching at the top of my windpipe. After coughing a few time some solid bit finally came out and was immediately swallowed. It struck me that I had breathed in a small fly early in August and it never came out. Toiday I'm still coughing a lot of mucus up, I guess it must be the wings, the antennas or the legs... [/gory bit] So I spent most of my time, not in bed, but at home. Not that exciting... And eventually I got really frustrated of staying in all that time and the time I was out I didn't feel well at all.
So I started thinking of taking advantage of that reclusion. Started thinking about my flat. I've been reading about what a house is on an ethnological level. I've found some really interesting books by the architect Yona Friedman. Some are in English and I can't but recommend them. If you read French you can find a few more. So I started writing list of rooms, of things in common in each room, the furniture... I never plan usually. I just use my eye and let my brain take the back seat.
I used my gunpowder camera with its six holes onto 4x5" Fujichrome film (provia 100F and 64T) I had some chemistry waiting in a bottle, it had been there for I don't know how long, already diluted but with very little air. It was C41 chemistry, so I figured I could go for cross-processing. Maybe this wasn't' such a lucky idea. And in a way I like some of the negatives better. I wouldn't have seen the if I had gone for E6 processing. So there was a lot of Photoshop involved to tame the colours.
What else? The pictures, maybe... OK, just a foreword before this. I'm not entirely satisfied with the pictures. I think I should give it an other go sometime. Now that I'm feeling better and that the holidays for everyone is coming to an end, I don't really feel like staying indoors much longer. I'd say I've premeditated this all too long. I should have, as usual, let my eyes do the work and not my brain so much.
Enough words, the pictures now. some positive, some negative. The full set is here with both positives and negatives of each picture.
I think this is a major success Pierre. It is brilliant in its simplicity, you have thought about your concept prior to executing it & that shows through in the excellence of the pictures so don't fret about thinking too much rather than 'seeing'. Some pictures here are weaker than others, I agree, but with a concept such as this you can revisit, reshoot & make those weaker ones as strong as the best here. I hope you are fully well again & sorry you had such a rough time...... hang on.... a missing picture.... Title : 'Sick at home'! Skin tones would work great cross processed!
Thanks Tony! You're right some aren't that good, it's a bit uneven. I have another twelve lists waiting if ever... but for the time being I think I'll wait for the next time I have to sit at home bored, hopefully not sick.
No I wasn't the colour these films turned out, yellowish green! Nor was I in bed with a thermometer stuck in the corner of my mouth! It was mostly unpleasant, nothing that serious in the end, and a lot of energy wasted...
I think these pictures are going to be displayed on an on-line gallery soon. http://www.2visu.org
holidays_flat11_1250.jpg is the best for me, But I like them all. Can you post a picture of the camera. I wonder what are the threads function. Best regards José Fernando
