My friend Ed volunteered to become another 8x10 box camera portrait victim. Most every rule of good portraiture is broken in this series; harsh lighting, blue-sensitive paper negatives, no makeup to compensate, extremely narrow DOF, mug-shot cmpositions, etc. Reality as the camera/lens/paper sees it.

Preflashed grade 2 paper, 4 second exposure under bright halogen lighting, F/4.5 Fujinon Xerox 240mm lens, drawn out to 310mm f.l. in the nested box camera.

~Joe

Early morning, before the sun rose above the Sandia Mountains, with enough light to manage a 2 second exposure on preflashed grade 2 paper using the Fujinon Xerox 240mm F/4.5 lens on my 8x10 box camera, I captured an image of a white cedar tree along my driveway.
A willing victim's image, captured onto 8"x10" preflashed grade 2 paper using the Fujinon Xerox lens on my nested box camera. 4 second exposure, bright halogen lighting, lens wide open at f/4.5, effective aperture due to bellows extension is f/6.5.

Corner-to-corner sharpness is pretty decent with this lens, but you can't tell in this image because at f/4.5 the DOF is extremely shallow.

The subject did a great job of remaining still during the setup and exposure. The extremely shallow DOF sort of hides the fact that her head is square up against the backdrop, which I intended as a stabilizer. About the tonal range of the paper negatives, they're not flattering for skin tones, and the blue sensitivity shows blemishes easily. And the lens is really sharp, showing every surface nuance. For serious portrait work, pancake makeup would perhaps be in order.
I was photographing the windfall apples and could not decide whether I needed to use a yellow filter to give me a wider dynamic range for my paper negative. In the end I took images with and without the filter. The results were interesting in the way the apples appeared due to the differing colour responses of the variable contrast paper.

The images were taken with my new prototype MDF 2-1/4 x 3-1/4 view camera through a 130mm lens salvaged from a big old Kodak folder.

The first image was f/5.6 for 1 second onto pre-flashed Ilford MGIV variable contrast paper without a yellow filter and was developed to completion (I have never had any success with over exposing and pulling the negative early, the ilford paper just seems to go blotchy).

I found the dark, almost metallic looking appearance of the apples rather intriguing. The paper would be responding to both blue and green light, however it seems to be the blue content that has dominated.

My camera is a cigar box fitted with a credit card (Fresnel) magnifier. These are sycamores near my house. Bright sun from the west, dark shadows. I'm sure I could have played around with preflashing, red or yellow filters, whatever, to try to control the contrast. That might have been a nice picture too. But instead of trying to get precise control over everything, I'm having more fun working within the camera's parameters (or lack thereof).

This is a two second exposure. Quarter inch aperture (~f/16). Ilford grade 2 RC paper, Ilford chemicals. I did "push" this in the darkroom -- three minutes in the soup instead of one.

Anyway...

8x10 box camera, 150mm binocular lens, F20, 4 second exposure on preflashed grade 2 paper. I've owned this calculator since the mid-1980s, only replaced the batteries once. I used it to calculate the "bellows" extension during these closeups; I measure the focal length from lens to film plane with a metric tape measure, then divide by the aperture diameter. Much easier to do when you know the actual aperture size, rather than a mere focal ratio.

~Joe
