A couple of blog posts about entering the photo competition at the Tennessee State Fair:

It Ain't All Midway, Ya Know
I'm a city boy. Forever I thought the State Fair was nothing more than rides, cotton candy, half dead goldfish and shady characters. I didn't know until recently that our great state fair held competitions for the best cows and pigs and flower arrangements (seriously?) and jarred beets. I thought that kinda stuff happened only...
http://www.squarepegpinhole.com/2010/08/it-aint-all-midway-ya-know.html

Get Thee to a Fair
Since I've never entered something at the fair, I wasn't certain where to take my stuff, what info needed to be on the mounting board, what to expect in general. For anyone who enters...
http://www.squarepegpinhole.com/2010/09/get-thee-to-fair.html

Please have a look. I'm just starting my blog and am interested in getting feedback on the writing, the photos, the content in general. It's hard to know whether to keep writing or not if you're not certain if people even care.

Thanks, Herschel

Today, I had to be at work at 6:30am (an hour earlier then normal) to sit in a very boring, snore, why am I here, snore, don't start sleeping, 2 hour meeting. The meeting was over and I was back to my desk to start reading emails and then the phone rang. Looked at the caller ID, I had no idea who the caller was, almost didn't answer but thought "why not, I can talk to anyone, after all I just bought a full cup a coffee with 2 shots of espresso". Picked up the phone and a boring morning began a great morning. The caller was somebody I barely know who works in a different department, different building, even a different city asking me why I didn't bring in any of my framed photographs for the upcoming employee art show. First I had to say "what employee art show are you talking about?", and secondly "what framed photographs?". She laughed and said "you know the Hennepin County Employee Art Show", I sent you an email about it two months ago. Well then I had to say "sorry, I must have missed it". So, she had to explain everything again, and ended with her saying "a couple of prints from the show you and your friends (aka the League of Upper Midwest Pinholers) had last year at the Edina Art Center". I didn't even know she saw the show. So I asked "when's the deadline to submit the entry form". Her answer? "You're late, it was 3 weeks ago. But don't worry, since I told the person who is putting the show together, that a friend of mine who is a pinhole photographer, is going to blow your mind when he brings in his photographs. So you have 3 hours to bring in your photographs. We are hanging the show tomorrow.

"Wait", I screamed, "3 hours? I have three hours to leave work, drive home, find a few framed photographs, drive to the Hennepin County Government Center, find a place to park downtown, and to find an office somewhere in a 24-story building where I can leave my prints?" "Oh sure" she said, "the office is on the 18th floor, and the office door will be locked at 1pm today.

What else could I do? I had to leave my desk and run, run, run. So that being said let me say that next month (July) three of my prints will be shown in the Hennepin County Government Center Gallery (Minneapolis, MN). There is not a opening or closing reception or anything fancy that most galleries have, just an employee group show in what is really store front windows (even though they call it a gallery) . Not sure that I'l even see the show, unless I have to go downtown for a real work related event. It was really nice to see her again, having an art discussion with her and the curator, explaining pinhole/lensless photography, and then back to work. The print's: <http://www.mnartists.org/work.do?rid=160207> Lake Harriet Bandshell</>, <http://www.mnartists.org/work.do?rid=166058> Lake Calhoun Walkway</>, and <http://www.mnartists.org/work.do?rid=202765> Lakewood Cemetery Lake</> have been posted here but these links open my MN Artists page.
