View Full Version : New f295 Layout Content...

Over the next few weeks we'll be consolidating the two f295 forums into one, changing the layout of this one, adding space for lens-based images (so long as they have a hand-crafted element), etc.
A number of you have sent me great feedback and suggestion. I'd be pleased to hear from anyone who has ideas & thoughts --either post here or PM me directly. Thanks!
And a big thank YOU for your patience. It's been 4 years since the pinholeforum has really changed.... (which must mean we had a solid design when we began -or I'm a slow learner)..... So for many/most there will be a period of adjustment. I believe that the forum will be stronger after but in the interim the change could be a bit annoying...
Thanks!
Tom

FYI:
the old DIY board still exists at it's old URL but I've disabled posting to the board and removed a number of categories that had time bound information (calls for entry) or were irrelevant - no images or process discussion has been removed.
I'm in the process of moving all of the text and images from that side to this. It's complicated as it's a totally separate forum instance, but is possible.... the text is easy but moving the associated images is proving to be more difficult... we'll get there....
if you have a question around that information please ask.. but it will all be here soon.

The migration/consolidation of the 2 f295 forums is now complete!
one sad result is that any bookmarks that you had for items on the alt side no longer work... all the content is here, you may have to search. (google search often works better than the f295 search engine) to find it.
we'll be upgrading the site software and making a few more layout/content tweaks over the coming days.
We also have some exciting new things on the horizon... stay tuned!
thanks for your patience. Any input on the revisions welcome.
Tom
Excellent work Tom!
OK an other suggestion, a colour thingy in front of the name of each category to have a faster visual indication when looking for a board. Each category would have a different colour 'bullet'.

thanks!
great suggestion... but given the way the board is programmed sadly is not feasible at this time... I'll look into it as we move forward.
thanks again!

Great work, Tom; it's nice to see the entire site's fora displayed in one coherent list.
I also like your vision for F295 being about '21st century photography', which implies that these alternative photographic methods are nevertheless contemporary.

Can't seem to log in using Opera 9.5.

There appears to be a problem logging in with Opera (I'm using 9.52) Whenever I try to enter a character into any Login Name box the page refreshes, or I get bounced to the mail forum page and I loose the character.
Login works fine on IE.

I like the new look, especially the full menu at the bottom. But where are the Back/Forward buttons, am I missing them? It's a little clunky to go back out to the subject thread just move to the next thread.
Great layout. I like it very much. It's very clear and with the number of different boards it really helps.
The signatures are reduced by default, that's good. I just changed the size of mine and it's perfect.
A big THANK YOU as always Tom!

Still having the login problem with Opera, and I am unable to reply to PM in IE 6.0. (Seems to be a problem editing this text in IE 6.0. Can't move the cursor with the mouse.)

Okay, perhaps it's just the settings on my PC, but since the style change to the forum most text are now underlined, and HTML links are not.
Perhaps it's just teething problems; I'm sure Tom's been up all night bottle feeding the little one!
~Joe
I found Mozilla on my suns laptop and lost the under lining and can now move the cursor with the mouse. IE6 underlined and locked the cursor last night. I fell sorry for our fearless founder in his upgrade but am confident he will over come all obstacles in the finest tradition of the intrepid explorers ofyoure.
Hope that last little bit buys a couple of brownie points....... :)

Still at it guys.... thanks for your patience :)
I'm hoping to have this all cleared up in the next day or so.... but some items may drag into next week as I'm in contact with the developers who coded all of this stuff for us....
thanks for enduring as we go through some growing pains...
thanks!
Tom
ps: please keep the notes/bugs/glitches coming, very much appreciated!
Using IE6 to access f/295 is troublesome; I can't use IE7 because my two desktops still run Win2K. One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that with IE6 the text was wrapping in the middle of words.
No worries, however, as it works great with Firefox.

the new look's kinda funky....
gives me vertigo when everything has the underlining turned on and off as I move the curser around
oh and the smilies don't work and I can't use the cursor to move the insertion point or highlight text for editing
this box uses IE7

thanks all- keep the input coming... i'm currently working on all the issues reported above... in the interim if you are able to use Mozilla or Firefox please do. They both work nicely..... I hope to have the other items fixed soon.
Thanks for your patience and a big thanks for your input on all the swirling issues!
All the work that goes into an upgrade is one reason I put it off until I thought it was really worth while...
bear with me! :)

ps: smilies work if you type them.....

safari and opera login issues should be solved now. please let me know if you're using one of those browsers and still experiencing problems. I'm working on the IE6 issues. It works fine in IE7 but i realize some of you can't upgrade (though I still suggest all windoze users get firefox)
more soon.... let me know what you're experiencing... (i know smileys still dont work)
thanks all..

I'm on Safari on Mac at home and not having any login problems. Text is wrapping strangely though, it breaks words arbitrarily at the right side of the window. This may be a Safari problem only as Firefox on Mac seems to be fine.

I'm using IE 6.0 and word wrap also doesn't function. But I'm learning to treat it as if it were a manual typewriter, and do
the 'carriage returns' myself. I'll have to see about 'upgrading' to Firefox.

the weird breaking should be fixed now..... let me know if you're still seeing it.
are you still experiencing the underlining Joe?
let me know.. i think it's fixed but wanted to check with you.
Why can't I add smilies in a normal posting but well in a PM ?

The underlining was gone when I finally checked in to F295 at home; at work (officially I don't surf the net unless on my break ... uh-huh) earlier in the week I had the problem. I'll assume it's fixed for now.
As for the line breaks, they appear to be fixed, as I'm seeing the auto word wrap happen as I'm typing this reply.
Keep up the good work, Tom; I like the overall new look.

Why can't I add smilies in a normal posting but well in a PM ?
good question. i'll look into it... ;)
With the new code, when we want to go back from a thread we've already visited and has new posts it takes two hits on the back 'key' (keyboard, mouse or tabletPC gesture). Affects both IE7 and Firefox 3 under WinXP and Vista.
Not a big deal, but if something can be done once the major issues are fixed...

this should be fixed now too.
