Picture 2. Like so. The subject is held in position by a flexible cable with an alligator clip. The camera complete with the extension T bar is positioned at the appropriate distance to obtain an adequate magnification for the negative size that is used. In this case a 4x5, f250 with L= 75mm was used at a distance of 300mm.

Picture 3. A desk lamp with 2 -60w frosted bulbs covered with waxed paper is places to the right of the camera 300mm from the subject. The paper is supposed to provide “diffused light”.

Picture 4. A second light fixture (recycled dark room red light) with 2-60w frosted bulb covered with waxed paper (not shown) is hanging from the ceiling and positioned 400mm above the subject.

Picture 5. An Incident light reading is taken at the darkest shadowed area at f22. If there are no predominant shadows I take the furthest lower corner of the view frame, making certain not to point the light meter at the light source. This area is place in Zone 3 the black velvet helps in that regard too. I convert the exposure time for the f# of the camera apply the reciprocity correction needed and expose for that! Sorry no beer draft to count, I know, I know, it’s pathetic. The two bath developer (D23+PMK) keeps check on the high lights.

Picture 6. I walk out of the office for the exposure making sure that the door is closed, this generally creates a draft that moves a dry leave hanging from the alligator clip, creating the charming “whisper of movement”. I love that!
The alligator clip and support is edited out, the back ground, singled out with a mask that exclude the subject, is evened with curves and blurred to eliminate the visible velvet texture. Amazing to me but I had to do no other adjustments on the subject mater. Maybe I should spring for a sheet of Mylar.

I see you work by the K.I.S.S. method also. Very simple and quite effective. (Glad to see clutter reigns supreme in your work space also!!)
