View Full Version : UV Light Box Building

I'm hoping to DIY my own UV light box in the coming weeks. Tube lights, ballasts, spacing, and the like have always left me a bit dumbfounded. I was wondering if I could skip the electrical complexity and expense and just buy and wire up 8 of these:

Any thoughts?

I built a light box with twelve of those bulbs - it worked great. I used ceramic sockets, which were pretty expensive, and I wished that I had included a cooling fan (temperature controlled, if feasible). I gave the unit away to a member of this fraternity when I graduated to an industrial plate burner. I encourage you to press on. This will work.

Excellent! Thanks Earl! Quick question on the build - did you mount the sockets to the top so that the bulbs were pointing down? Or did you figure out a way to mount the sockets so the bulbs were parallel to the print? Just curious if it matters in terms of even light spread.

They didn't have the spirals when I built mine but here is how it is set up. It works quite well and teh times aren't outrageous.

Price wise I would imagine these are going to be pretty close to bulbs, sockets, wiring etc.

Thanks Marv - great write-up! I'm sure the costs will end up being comparable, I'm just not good with electrical work, and so when people start talking about ballasts and efficiency and layer that on circuit wiring and such, I'm sinking in quicksand. Going with the spiral bulbs, with the self-contained ballasts, makes it so that all I have to do is wire up a bunch of normal household sockets and plug them in. As you said in your post, KISS :)

Kier - I mounted the bulbs in the top. I will see if I can find the pictures of it that I posted on f295.

Here it is: http://f295.f295.org/uploads/Blah.pl?m-1147555746/s-0/#num0

Excellent - thanks Earl! That's very similar to what I had in mind
