alex,

splendid photographs! and at f4!

I thought that at f/4 a simple lens would look pretty crappy. clealy not.

have you cropped out and crappy bits from the edges of the photographs?

thanks for sharing them.

seems to give quite different effect depending if the subject is close or distant?

LiquidLight,

Here in Russia I can find a lot of old lenses for Zenit camera. One of those lenses is Gelios 44M and it variation:
http://www.zenit.istra.ru/archive/lenses/helios-44m-4-s.jpg
http://www.zenit.istra.ru/archive/lenses/helios-44m-design.jpg

The upper lens in it is a meniscus. So, I disassemble all lens and aperture mechanizm leave only upper lens but turn it over.

http://38foto.irkutsk.fio.ru/web/monokl05.jpg

So I have a ~83 mm f/2.8 simple meniscus lens
After that I've made some external apertures (simple holes, sets of holes) and install them in to filters frame.
And use macro ring (about 14 mm) to install it in a Zenit camera.

like this:

Snowman #1 has perhaps a cardboard box next to his head (which has melted by now I am sure)...it looked like it said Slava... :O)
