This is the secret project I've been working on, and mentioned a couple of times. I'm sure this will make any Rollei fanatic come looking for blood, but I really don't care what they think. From the front it looks pretty normal (even if it is still naked, I'll fix that soon enough)

No folks, this isn't some Photoshop trickery, it's something Dr. Frankenstein might be proud of! It is a semi-functional prototype that I've been working on, mostly to see what would really be involved in making this go. You'll notice it only has an old 6mp back attached, because that's what I have. It really needs the Megavision E4 which is 16MP and square. Unfortunately that back is only 36x36mm, so there is a pretty big crop, but it is available in color (Bayer) and monochrome versions. The machining would allow up to the E6 (50x40mm 39mp), but I doubt the lenses would be up to the task.

(sorry for all the scrolling, but it adds to the suspense)

:o

That's seriously cool. Don't keep us in suspense too long - we want to see what it can do!

I'm waiting for the other half of the system to come back from upgrades. I have a feeling that the focus is going to be so far off that this will be unusable (except for "macro" work). Once I get some pictures with it dressed I'm going to put them up and see what kind of reactions I get. Hoping a few people might want a fully functional version (and that the manufacturer will help me out with the needed mods). If not I'll sell the completely rebuilt camera with the film back installed. I cut through an ugly parts camera to make the above. Ugly defined as... it looks like the parts camera spent time under water.

If focus is off, it might be more interesting to move the ground glass up and down rather than trying to get the sensor exactly at teh film plane.

The problem I think I might run into is that the sensor may be so far out that I can't hit infinity because the focus rack won't move any closer. I may need to slice the body away to move the sensor close enough to get where I can move lenses and mirror and ground glass around to make it work. I'm going to contact Megavision and see what it would cost to have the sensor socket extended for the newer backs. For mine I think the parts camera is going to meet my Dremel tool, and then make a new mounting plate that puts the back right up against the film guides. The reason I didn't already do this is it's going to be UGLY!

I've got the leather installed, and will probably get pictures up sometime late Monday.

Found the naked photos being used on some other forum, so I changed them all to be the newer blue color. For the most part people think it is stupid, and for some reason they still think this isn't real and that the only "real" digital Rollei TLR is that toy camera. The toy isn't even really a TLR, the viewing lens is just there for show, it uses an electronic viewfinder.

BTW, next project will be a Mamiya 7 rangefinder digital, but after I finish the Rollei. I've decided to simply chop the parts body to move the focus where it needs to be. Yes it's going to meet the Dremel tool! That should really make the Rollei fanatics cry. I think all the knobs are coming off too (except focus), they make it feel awkward in my hands. Haven't really decided about the knobs, I'll have to use it for a while before I do that.

Still waiting for Megavision to send the new software... They only got part of things right went the sent the portable storage device back. So I still have no way of testing. Waiting for a small sheet metal shear and brake to arrive, which should allow me to make the new back and the shims I'll need.
