Today the counter top people brought me a slab of engineered quartz (a familiar brand name). It is 37" x 68" x 3 cm thick. It was a remnant in the stone yard, and I took delivery without any fabrication, so it has just the top polished surface, with four sawn edges. It is placed on a base constructed from 2x4's, which was carefully leveled before placement of the slab, and shimmed after placement. I have yet to coat anything on it, but I am certain that it is more level than the sheets of glass that I have been using until now.
This stone slab will be used for coating light sensitive emulsion onto art paper (cyanotype, argyrotype, pt/pd, gum, NaCl/silver nitrate), pouring carbon tissue, carbon transfer, paper cutting and tearing, matting and framing, and any other process that requires a hard, flat surface.
