Imagine your 1500 miles from home. You are borrowing a tripod with a 1/4 inch screw. You realize the 3/8 to 1/4 inch bushing is missing out of your camera base plate. You go buy a new one....WRONG!!!! We looked all over and came up blank.........so.......

.....and you are ready for two weeks of shooting in the great southwest. A hundred or so set ups later and it was still working fine.

not owning a tap and die set, i would find it easier to just whittle a new tripod from those saguaro "tubes". nice work, marv!

It's one of the paradoxes of life; any podunk town in the middle of nowhere will have an auto parts store that can sell you a cheap tap and die set for $20 and likely a machine shop (that makes its dubious living milling engine heads and boring blocks) that will center drill the bolt for you for the amusement factor, and 3-4 wiseacres who'll sit around and crack jokes the whole time you work -- but you need to be in a fairly good sized settlement before you'll find a hardware store that carries 1/4 to 3/8 threaded bushings (Lowe's or Home Depot, but most Ace and Tru-Value would have those, too). For whatever it's worth, though, the brass ones sold at hardware and home improvement stores for putting a 1/4-20 bolt into a wall stud will fit (though they usually have to be filed or ground a bit for length).

    Meantime, nice save!

Ah the Zone VI... its a good thing you mentioned this. the bushing on my zone vi is cracked and I've been worried that it will break soon. At least now i know its not a special order part and I can get one from a hardware store.
