OK, they're dichroic prisms, and $35 for a 35mm cube is a very good price.
There are a lot on ebay, most appear to be seconds, with nicks, etc.
At http://www.cnilaser.com/combiner.htm there's a chart showing separation % for similar 2- and 3-color prisms/

This is more or less what one would find in a 3ccd video camera right? I think i've seen something like that when taking one of them apart once.
I envision three monochrome negatives for printing 3 color gum or carbon prints. But since digital color separations are so easy, why bother? I guess I shouldn't ask that kind of question on a site where everyone builds their own cameras out of tins cans and plywood. . . . .
