Every World Pinhole Day, I try to get my three kids out with cameras to start getting a feel for pinhole photography (and photography in general). Over the years, I have been very pleased with their images, and this year is no exception. Only my two boys took part this year (Margot had a soccer game and wasn't up for a trek down to the field afterward). I went out by myself in the morning, but I took the boys down to the river right around 6 PM. The sun was still up pretty high and so the theme of their images ended up being "pinhole sunbursts." They each managed to expose one roll each of 120 film, Fuji NPH 400 in both cases.

Here are the four best shots by my older son, Henry (age 13). He used an ONDU 6x6 pinhole camera:

What do you suppose accounts for the strong colours and more or less dotted flare with the ONDU that are surprisingly neutral in comparison and more streaked looking with the Leclerc?

Thanks, Collin, and good question. The cameras are very similar in design in terms of distance of film plane from pinhole and size of pinhole (both are around f140). I suppose there could be some slight micro-variations in the edge of the pinhole that would make the light diffract just a bit differently, but also the boys were set up in slightly different spots and so it may be just a matter of variations in angle.

Angle of the sun looks similar, but that might not be it. I think the Ondu uses a laser drilled pinhole. Maybe the Leclerc uses a chemically etched pinhole in a thinner shim?
