That's about right. I actually stood in a darkened part of my apartment, held the lens up toward an open window during a bright day, and had the image fall on a bright white piece of plastic. I made sure infinity was really in focus, and measured from the plastic to the back of the lens. For a singlet lens, that's close enough.

There are more complicated instructions in Primitive Photography for multi-element lenses. If you purchase a lens element from a surplus place, it will most likely have the focal length already specified.

I put up a page of photos of my homemade 4x5 foamcore camera on my website:

I did a step by step construction log on the 120 pano pinhole that I built.

There are no plans to download but it's easy to follow what I did.

Sorry for the long interval. Lots of things happened recently, none of them good. I had to temporarily give up photography and my website to care for some family needs. Hopefully I will start back up soon, and if so I will provide a new link to replace the old. No promises, though. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Hang in there. Good luck working through it all. See you when you can stop back.
    Always welcome here.

Just stopping back and spending a little while looking at a few threads has convinced me that I need to get back into my favorite hobby at least a little bit, however hectic things may be. So, I found my web backup files and put up a new website with the page about the 4x5 foamcore camera that I had up previously. Here's the new, and hopefully persistent, link:

Comments and questions are absolutely welcome.

Jon, I really like the sequence on your site about the box camera. Using a magnifying glass as a lens is neat, very much in the spirit of improvised optics, something that interests me. I would also like to see posted some of your images from that camera.

I know how hectic life can be at times, but it's encouraging when you can find the time to fit a little art into the midst of all the turmoil. Good luck and post us some images.

    ~Joe
