Daguerreotypes Past and Present
The Daguerreian Society
Symposium Reception: 26 April 2007: 7-10pm

In conjunction with the daguerreotype workshop, the Daguerreian Society will be hosting an exhibition of over fifty daguerreotypes, both contemporary and antique.

Exemplifying the work of today’s artists will be Toronto’s Mike Robinson and New York City’s Jerry Spagnoli, acknowledged as two of the world’s finest practitioners. As the artist-in-residence for the workshop, it will be especially appropriate to have Mr. Robinson’s work on display so he can discuss his work with viewers. Mr. Spagnoli’s work, and his collaboration with renown artist Chuck Close, has received much attention in the national press and his marvelous book, Daguerreotypes, was just published by Steidl.

The antique images on display will cover a wide variety of genre and will provide an interesting comparison to the works of the modern makers. Contemporary artists consider the work of the 1840s and ’50s masters some of the finest achievements in the art of the daguerreotype, a point the exhibition hopes to illustrate.
